SoundCloud – Discovering DJs, Producers and Underground Music
If you're into underground music, DJ sets, new producers and tracks that don't always make it onto mainstream platforms, SoundCloud has been one of the biggest names in online music for years.
Launched in 2007, SoundCloud developed into a huge community where musicians, DJs, producers and independent artists can upload and share their music directly with listeners around the world.
A Platform for Underground Music
One of SoundCloud's biggest strengths has always been music discovery.
You can find everything from house, trance and techno to jungle, drum & bass, UK hardcore, makina, hard dance, garage and old skool.
Alongside established artists are thousands of independent producers and DJs uploading original tracks, remixes, bootlegs, demos and DJ sets.
For underground scenes, that's important. Artists don't necessarily need a major record label or radio station behind them to get their music heard.
DJs and DJ Sets
SoundCloud has long been popular with DJs.
Many use it to upload recorded sets, promotional mixes and clips of new productions. Following DJs can be a great way of hearing what they're currently playing and discovering tracks you might otherwise miss.
It has also helped DJ mixes travel far beyond their original club or rave. A set recorded at a local event can potentially be heard by listeners on the other side of the world.
Independent Producers
SoundCloud has also played a massive role in giving independent producers somewhere to showcase their work.
A producer can finish a new tune and put it online without waiting for a traditional release. Listeners can then like, repost, comment and share it.
That direct connection between the person making the music and the people listening to it is one of the things that helped SoundCloud become such an important part of internet music culture.
Finding Forgotten and Rare Music
For fans of older dance music, searching SoundCloud can sometimes uncover some brilliant material.
You may find old DJ sets, forgotten mixes, unreleased productions, radio recordings and tracks uploaded by the original artists themselves.
It's another place worth searching when digging into the history of rave, hardcore and underground dance music.
